Waterloo Region, Ontario. Waterloo Region Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis
(WRGR), a group of residents in Waterloo Region who are helping support displaced people fleeing the war in Ukraine is pleased to announce that they have received a grant from Immigration Partnership Immigrant Economic Wellbeing Fund. The purpose of this timely grant is to provide financial assistance to individuals/families that host Ukrainians escaping the appalling situation intheir country.
Currently, these Ukrainian families enter Canada under a special Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) Application. Under this program they are not considered refugees, so Government support is minimal. This housing grant will assist people who might want to temporarily host a displaced family but may not have felt financially able to do so.
A new guesthouse for these families has recently been approved in the community of Maryhill with 13 spaces available for up to 22 residents. But there are still many more families with young children arriving in December. The subsidy will be approximately $200-$350 per month, depending on the size of family being supported and the financial needs of the host.
WRGR is actively looking for another 15 places for Ukrainian families to live for up to 3 months. while they work to get their lives together and make a home in Waterloo Region.
The Holiday season is almost upon us and families with children are looking for safe and welcoming place in time for Christmas. Anyone who may have been considering offering up space as a host is encouraged to contact WRGR at www.wrgrassrootsresponse.ca.
WRGR can be contacted at wrgrassrootsresponse@gmail.com or 519-242-8524.
