People Need People: Building Connections, Changing Lives

Inna Biliaieva, Volunteer Coordinator of Grassroots Response

"Just came back from a walk with Viktoriia. She is really cool, and baby Eva is so cute. It was nice to chat about art too, and just talking about anything felt good. I really feel a nice connection. Thank you for this program!"

In times of uncertainty, small acts of kindness can mean the world. That’s exactly what the Buddy Program, created by Grassroots Response is all about—building real, human connections. By bringing local volunteers and Ukrainian newcomers together, it creates friendships, support networks, and a sense of belonging.

Why the Buddy Program Matters

Leaving everything behind and starting over in a new country is incredibly tough. Many Ukrainian newcomers arrive in Canada with hope but without familiar faces to lean on. The Buddy Program helps bridge that gap by pairing them with local volunteers who offer not just practical support but also the warmth of human connection.

Sometimes, all it takes to brighten someone’s day is a friendly chat, a shared cup of tea, or a walk in the park. Our Buddy shares, "Inna came over for tea this morning. We talked for quite a while and really enjoyed each other’s company. Hopefully, the cold will let up soon so we can take her son and my dog for a walk".

How It Works

The Buddy Program matches local volunteers with Ukrainian newcomers based on shared interests and needs. Once paired, Buddies meet in whatever way works best—whether it’s grabbing coffee, practicing English, exploring the community, or just lending an ear.

A Community Built on Kindness

The impact of this program goes far beyond individual friendships—it’s about creating a welcoming and inclusive community. The Grassroots team continues to receive heartwarming feedback from both volunteers and newcomers. One supporter shared, "I want to applaud Grassroots for coming up with such an idea. I’m interested and look forward to getting involved!"

Right now, around 50 families and individuals in the Waterloo Region are still looking for a Buddy. Whether it’s helping someone get settled, introducing them to new places, or just being there for a chat, your kindness can make a world of difference.

As a volunteer Buddy, I feel connected to my neighbours in the Ukrainian community. I love spending time with my partner, and our puppy in Forbes Park. It’s been wonderful to see the Ukrainian families enjoying the park. We live in a beautiful and diverse community, and I believe all people deserve a sense of safety and belonging. I was glad to hear of the opportunity to support and build connections in Hespeler neighbourhoods.

Meeting with Inna Dolid has helped me understand the will and eagerness of the Ukrainian newcomers to work and share the many skills that they possess. Inna D. is multi-lingual and taught high school English in Ukraine. Discussing language with Inna D. has been so interesting and fun. Starting over is not easy, many of the qualifications that she and others have achieved are not yet transferable in Canada. With the world as it is, we need to offer a safe and warm welcome to those who’ve experienced incredible loss. I believe it’s within all of us to give what we can with the resources we have available. As the saying goes - "It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness".
