Welcome to the Buddy Program
The Buddy Program, organized by Grassroots Response, aims to support Ukrainian newcomers as they adapt to life in the Waterloo Region. This project connects local volunteers (Buddies) with individuals or families, fostering relationships that provide practical assistance, emotional support, and community integration.
Who Can Be a Buddy?
-
Local Residents: Anyone in the Waterloo Region with a desire to help newcomers feel welcome and supported.
-
Compassionate and Open-Minded: Volunteers who are patient, empathetic, and respectful of diverse cultural backgrounds.
-
Available and Committed: Buddies should have some time to dedicate weekly or bi-weekly for meaningful engagement with their matched family or individual.
How Can a Buddy Support a Family or Individual?
-
Networking and Employment: Help newcomers identify job opportunities, prepare applications, and build professional connections.
-
Practical Help: Assist with transportation to appointments or introduce them to key community resources and events.
-
Social Connection: Introduce newcomers to social and recreational activities, helping them form new friendships and integrate into their community.
-
Advocacy and Guidance: Accompany them to important meetings or appointments when needed and help them navigate local systems.
What Does a Buddy Do?
-
Orientation and Support: Help newcomers understand their local community, including how to use public transportation, locate services, and navigate essential systems like healthcare and education.
-
Emotional Connection: Be a friendly and supportive presence, providing encouragement and helping to alleviate feelings of isolation.
-
Job Assistance: Assist newcomers in job searches, including helping with resumes, preparing for interviews, and connecting them with local employment opportunities or networks, if possible.
-
Language Practice: Offer casual English conversation practice or language exchange to help them improve their communication skills.
-
Information Sharing: Guide newcomers to resources for settling in, such as workshops, community programs, or legal assistance.
